As sure as winter turns to spring, every Mercedes-Benz model begets a more potent AMG iteration. Less than a year after introducing the 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLE-class, set to succeed the two-door versions of the C-class and E-class, Mercedes-AMG unveils the CLE53.
With numbers indicating its power stance, the CLE53 coupe bridges the gap between the 402-horsepower C43 sedan and the formidable 677 horsepower of the C63. While the C43 and C63 boast a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four with varying hybrid assist levels, the CLE adheres to a six-cylinder engine. Generating 443 horsepower from its turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six and employing a 48-volt hybrid system for a low-end power surge, the CLE53 claims a 4.0-second sprint to 60 mph and a top speed of 155 mph. The potential for quicker acceleration is evident, especially considering the C43 reached 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds in our tests.
AMG emphasizes substantial tweaks to this iteration of the inline-six engine, optimizing combustion chambers with redesigned channels and new piston rings, complemented by a new turbocharger. The turbo collaborates with an electric auxiliary compressor, providing a boost pressure of up to 22 psi and an overboost function for 12 seconds.
Equipped with Mercedes’ rear-biased 4Matic all-wheel-drive system, which decouples the front axle when unnecessary, the CLE53 features a standard nine-speed automatic transmission with a clutch pack. Rear-wheel steering is standard, and 19-inch wheels come standard, with optional 20-inchers.
Exterior changes at the rear are subtle, with widened fenders, badging, and a broader rear track. An optional AMG Performance Studio package enhances the front and rear fascia, spoiler lip, and rear diffuser board. The front showcases a more assertive hood and an AMG-styled bumper and grille, with wider front fenders by 2.3 inches and rears by 3.0 inches compared to the standard CLE coupe.
Inside, the CLE53 mirrors the standard coupe, featuring a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and an 11.9-inch central display. Standard MB-Tex and microfiber upholstery can be upgraded to Nappa leather with AMG-embossed crests in the front headrests. An optional AMG Performance Seat Package swaps standard buckets for seats with more pronounced bolsters. The flat-bottom AMG steering wheel, wrapped in Nappa leather with aluminum shift paddles, replaces the regular steering wheel.
The CLE53’s release date remains unannounced, expected to hit the market next year. Pricing is anticipated to fall between the C43 and C63, likely around $85,000 upon release.
