2024 BMW Z4 Embraces Manual Gearbox Upgrade

The 2024 BMW Z4 is set to revive the manual transmission option after a prolonged absence. This decision follows Toyota’s response to public demand by introducing a six-speed manual option for the closely related GR Supra in the 2023 model year.

Both the Z4 and Supra will share the manual transmission, but BMW emphasizes that each car has distinctively tuned linkages and bushings. Like the Supra, the Z4’s manual transmission will be exclusive to the 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder engine variant, known as the M40i. Unfortunately, those hoping for a manual option with the base turbo-four engine will be disappointed.

The manual transmission will be part of a comprehensive option package, and while selecting a three-pedal setup is sometimes cost-neutral, it is expected to come with a price tag of approximately $3500 for the Z4. BMW justifies this cost by assuming that those opting for a manual transmission also desire a sportier driving experience with the Z4.

The package not only includes the manual transmission but also features the electronically controlled M differential, standard on all M40i Z4s. The steering undergoes a retuning process to provide enhanced feedback to the driver, while the adaptive dampers are optimized for more aggressive driving. Additionally, the manual version of the Z4 will boast a staggered wheel setup, featuring 19-inch wheels at the front and 20-inch wheels at the rear. BMW assures enthusiasts that the manual Z4 won’t be a limited-edition offering, as the automaker plans to produce as many units as there is demand. Production of the first manual Z4 versions is slated to begin in the first quarter of 2024, according to BMW.
